GST: Government of India should release a free online invoicing module for vendors

Government of India is going full force in implementation of GST. One suggestion is that government should release a free online and app based invoicing module for small vendors. This will reduce friction while on boarding these vendors and keep their costs low.

Delhi Government’s Odd / Even Number Car Experiment

We are in round two of Delhi Government’s odd numbered cars on odd dates and even number cars on even dates experiment. While this experiment is going on between 15th April 2016 to 30th April 2016, I have following thoughts:

  • How much time and effort was spent in analyzing the reasons for pollution in Delhi?
  • If a study was done, what are the results of that study?
  • Did this study suggest multiple solutions to Delhi’s pollution problem?
  • What solutions were suggested?
  • Why Odd / Even Number car experiment decision was given priority over other sulutions?

I think the government should come with a 1 year / 2 year / 3 year / 5 year / 10 year / 20 year / 50 year plan to combat pollution in Delhi.

Meanwhile, Delhi residents are more happy with fewer traffic jams and decreased commuting time to their destinations than pollution!

Because time we can measure ourselves but for pollution we rely on numbers from different agencies who must have impeccable reputations.

cPanel based server is slow and server load is always high : Fixed

Recently I found that one of servers was very slow and customers were complaining. I found that the load on the server was consistently above 15.  The culprit was huge 8Gb eximstats MySQL database maintained by cPanel and low free disk space. I fixed it by proceeding as follows:

– Logged in to server using ssh
– ‘df -h’ revealed only 7 Gb was free disk space out of 110 Gb. Not a happy sign.
– Did ‘cd /’ followed by ‘du -h –max-depth=1’. It revealed that /var folder was occupying over 20 Gb space
– Futher investigations reveled that the eximstats database in /var/lib/mysql was occupying 8 Gb of space. I decided to handle that.

You can do all of the above via WHM too. In WHM -> Server Status -> Server Information, current disk usage section will give you free disk space. WHM -> phpMyAdmin and selecting eximstats database shows how much disk space it occupies.

I searched in Google to find out more about eximstats. It seems, these are stats of exim maintained by cPanel. By default, cPanel retains stats for 30 days.  Time for more action …. logged in to WHM

– In WHM -> Tweak settings -> Stats and Logs section, changed value of  “The interval, in days, to retain Exim stats in the database” from 10 to 7 and clicked save
 – To save disk space, I decided to retain only Webalizer stats. Went to WHM -> Tweak settings  “Stats” section. Disabled all stats programs except Webalizer and clicked Save

Now time to clean up the eximstats database.

– In WHM -> phpMyAdmin selected eximstats database and “truncate” all tables i.e. sends, smtp, failures and defer. This took a very long time as the size of database was big.

Now I checked free disk space via WHM -> Server Status -> Server Information . Current disk usage section was showing 15 Gb of free disk space. That was a good sign. Just to be sure I rebooted the server using WHM-> System Reboot -> Graceful Server Reboot. After sometime when server came online, I found that the server load settled to 0.9 to 1.2 and free disk space was over 15 gb!

I logged in to server again after a few days. Server load was still  between 0.5 to 1.5 and free space was around 20Gb. What a relief!

Google, give ME control over search results

Google, give me choiceGoogle lists websites in search results, as per what it thinks are relevant for us. I will be happy if I had control over the selection criteria.

How would it be is I could say?

  • Show oldest sites, which have my search words, first
  • Show me sites, which have my search words, with say 100 backlinks
  • Show me sites which do not have my search words in the Title but in the page text
  • Show me sites with PageRank between 2 and 3 or a number of my choice
  • And so on …

This will help ME in controlling the search results instead of Googe doing it for me. This way Google will serve me better as I have more options to control results.

Ecommerce is on fire in India

In spite of many people thinking otherwise, Ecommerce is on fire in India. Everyday I Future Bazaarcome to know about new Ecommerce sites offering products online. Most of these sites are well designed and are offering thousands of products.

Some of the older ecommerce sites are shopping.indiatimes.com, shopping.rediff.com, homeshop18.com, futurebazar.com

There are quite a few new entrants. Some of them are yebhi.com, fashnvia.com

I find the order servicing to be better than expected. Some Ecommerce site deliver products overnight and most of them within 2-3 days. This means that the Ecommerce websites care about their customers. It also means that the logistics of delivering products to customers in hundreds of Indian cities has been worked out well.

All this is good for customers in india, who can purchase products online from the comfort of their home or office. They save time and money, while getting great choice and service.
