When usage grows… but revenue collapses. A hard lesson from Tailwind Labs.

Tailwind Labs reportedly laid off ~75% of its engineering team after an 80% drop in revenue — even as Tailwind CSS usage continues to surge.

At first glance, this feels impossible.
More users should mean more money, right?

The company says the rise of AI coding agents has fundamentally broken its business model by cutting developers off from the documentation pages that once drove paid conversions.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth: many founders are now facing 👇

AI has changed the value chain faster than business models could adapt.

A real scenario for companies:

You build a tool or a service that customers love. Usage goes up month after month.

Then one day a client casually says:

“We don’t need the paid version anymore. ChatGPT does 70% of this now.”

No anger. No drama. Just logic.

That is a wake-up call.

What happened to Tailwind Labs is not about product quality.
Tailwind CSS is still phenomenal.

This is about:

  • Open-source success not guaranteeing sustainable revenue
  • AI collapsing documentation, boilerplate, and setup value
  • Users loving tools… but not paying for them anymore

The real lesson:

  • Adoption ≠ monetization
  • Popularity ≠ protection
  • And “developer love” ≠ business moat

Going forward, companies will need to:

  • Monetize outcomes, not features
  • Build services around AI
  • Assume AI will eat anything repetitive, fast

This isn’t the end of open source.
But it is the end of old assumptions.

Curious to hear from founders and devs here —
